ABSTRACT

The reservations apart, the analysis contained in the Yazhou Zhoukan compilations does give an indication of the quite profound changes that have taken place in what is called the Chinese business sphere, basically, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. In this respect, it is by analysing what has occurred in Taiwan that we can most clearly see the massive changes that have taken place in the regional economy and the clear benefits of regionalisation and globalisation. Many Taiwanese choose to study in the United States, this is particularly so for post-graduate work in science and technology. Starting in Taiwan and spreading out from there, the new image of the Chinese diaspora economy is of a substantial shift towards computer-based and high-tech sectors. Taiwan has clearly established itself as the major centre of the technology but Hong Kong and Singapore are rapidly following although less in developing the technology than in using it the most effectively.
