ABSTRACT

Ideas, individuals and media are persistently crossing borders, disciplines and contexts, while intensifying on singular occasions and places. This chapter focuses on the international dimension of Yugoslav avant-garde art and shows international artistic collaborations across the blocs during the Cold War. The Edinburgh Festival, organized by Richard Demarco, and the April Festival of Expanded Media, organized by the Students’ Cultural Centre in Belgrade, are examples of sites of exchange and encounters that shaped the global face of contemporary art. Dietmar Unterkofler offers a comparative analysis of these highly relevant artistic practices beyond national and disciplinary borders.
