ABSTRACT

The chapter investigates the situation of Romanian art during the communist dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on the existence of a second public sphere, which emerged parallel to official art. Between the two public spheres there were connections, created by artists who were active in both areas. This situation was very specific in the Eastern Bloc, where the freedom of expression was limited. Art – especially event-based art, intermediality and art’s communication, which are debated in this chapter – cannot be understood without the influence of the political and social context.
