ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to examine how groups can sustain collective action. The analysis is based on rich empirical cases that feed into the theoretical literature on the nature of co-operation and will attempt to understand the reasons behind the success of group activities by exploring how their actions are embedded in social relations (Granovetter, 1985). The survey will concentrate on the ‘how’ questions as well as the ‘why’ (Granovetter, 1994).
