ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how teachers can help students develop both the desire to study and learn, and the expertise needed to succeed. Five components of learning supported by current research are presented, and their instructional applications are developed with specific suggestions for transfer to independent student use. These factors are: (a) initiating learning with inquisitiveness and questions, (b) utilizing the social factors that can facilitate learning, (c) using multiple sources of information when learning, (d) adjusting learning strategies to fit the goals and materials used, and (e) becoming self-aware and self-monitoring of one’s own learning. The chapter concludes with a reminder that improving students’ study behaviors is the responsibility of the total school community.
