ABSTRACT

Women can be said to have propped up 'half the sky' in human society. However, there has been prejudice against women, and they have not been treated as equals with men over the long history of the development of human society. The Chinese approach to government includes respect for women, protection of their fundamental human rights and the provision of conditions that give full play to their talent and potential in the legal framework and ethics of society as a whole. China has scored great achievements in the protection of women's rights, especially viewed from the perspective of policy making. However, many problems remain unsolved in different aspects of social life. A profound change with regard to Chinese women's ideas and social position took place in the mid-nineteenth century, and this change came along with China's involvement in the world modernization trend regardless of whether such an involvement was active or passive on the part of China.
