ABSTRACT

Growing out of a Scandinavian research initiative instigated some three decades ago, the workplace bullying research field is now an international endeavor, with research being conducted all over the globe. In this chapter, we draw out some of the historical lines in the research field and present the concept of workplace bullying with emphasis on and discussion of definitional features, assessment, and prevalence. In addition, existing literature regarding the sources of bullying in the workplace is reviewed, including the personality of those involved and sources at the group and organizational levels. Next, the consequences of bullying are addressed. In this section, prevailing theoretical accounts of the link between bullying and its adverse outcomes are outlined, and research concerning health outcomes, consequences for participation in working life, and organizational implications are reviewed. Finally, some practical implications are outlined, along with our summary and conclusions.
