ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by discussing the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and how it impacts workplaces. It identifies best practices for employers in addressing IPV. The chapter explains laws that impose specific requirements on employers and provides additional resources. Many discussions of the workplace effects of IPV begin with a horrifying story of an individual whose partner comes to her workplace, brandishing a weapon, and murders her. It is important to recognize that violent attacks at work by an intimate partner of an employee are relatively uncommon. By providing support such as reasonable time off and referrals to domestic violence services in the community, and taking basic security precautions, employers can play an important role in helping address IPV and dramatically decreasing the likelihood of workplace violence. While most physical violence against intimate partners occurs in the home, IPV may affect the workplace in several ways.
