ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the case of the definite form of the sortal. The only category of singular symbol which Gottlob Frege recognises is the category of the name. The concept of 'general term', though from one aspect of Frege's writing in the Foundations relates to single words, it concerns more than what falls under the grammatical category of common noun. As Frege treats sortals as essentially predicative he may only introduce the notion of a 'predicative function' by reference to this notion itself which is absurd for a predicative function, a predicable, is of its essence incomplete. One final attempt may be presented to support the thesis that Frege, in his notion of 'concept words' to which finite number belongs, does recognise the category of the sortal in that he recognises, 'planet' or 'god' - in general, 'F' as the unit relative to a finite number.
