ABSTRACT

Once Baumrind (1967) had introduced her two dimensions of parenting, warmth and control, they soon became combined into four parenting styles. Authoritarian parent ing is characterised by high control and low warmth while authoritative parenting is based on both high control and high warmth. Permissive parenting reflects low control but high warmth, whereas neglectful parenting is based on both low control and low warmth. Since then, countless studies in the Western world have shown that authori tative parenting ‘works best’ (Maccoby & Martin, 1983); i.e., a parenting style com bining a high level of support with a high level of control makes for children who grow up psycho-emotionally sound and socially well-adjusted compared to the other three styles.
