ABSTRACT

Nagytétény is an industrial suburb on the southern edge of Budapest, about 12km from the city centre. It is located in the XXII district. It developed as an industrial area from the early twentieth century onwards. It has a mix of older single houses and new estates which have gradually crept up to the factories. It is well served by roads and rail and its fringe location gives it good accessibility in several directions. In the 1980s its industries included chemicals, army engineering, rubber, pharmaceuticals, paper, a pig farm and sparkling wine production, By the time of the study the main employers were Chinoin (a French owned chemical factory) and Pannonplast (a South Korean owned plastics factory).
