ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates the broader implications of Slovene agricultural accession to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) both for the European Union (EU) budget and Slovene agriculture. It focuses on the implications of Slovenian agriculture accession to the EU by using the European Simulation Model (ESIM). The chapter analysis agricultural and food market structures and their developments. It provides an overview of the agricultural market and trade policies, highlighting implications for agricultural market support. The chapter compares the level of agricultural prices and protection in Slovenia with that in the EU and with selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It argues that Slovene agriculture should be ready not only to join the CAP of the EU, but also be ready to compete in production, processing, and marketing of agricultural and food products on the Single European Market (SEM).
