ABSTRACT
The main aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental impact of a typical cosmetic package, mainly in terms of energy use and Global Warming Potential (GWP). The contribution of each of the compact’s individual life cycle phases were assessed and any significant outcomes were identified. The impact of the use phase, only relevant when the user carries the portable package in a vehicle, is also considered. After understanding the current life cycle impact of the compact in terms of the two main categories mentioned, other scenarios were assessed to identify sustainable alterations that could be made by varying the plastic material the compact is composed of and by removing material from the base and sidewalls of the package. Identifying the most sustainable option in terms of the manufacturing location of this product was also a priority and one scenario was dedicated to this.
