ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some historical perspectives on structural changes to analyze the differences in the productive structure in the Brazilian economy and five macro regions such as North, Northeast, Central West, Southeast, and South for the years of 1985, 1990, and 1995 to linkage analysis applied to input-output tables. The issue derives from a sense that the Brazilian economy is one characterized by striking differences in regional performance and structure. It focuses on income distribution and changes in the location of industry. The chapter explores differences in economic structure and structural change from an interindustry perspective. It presents an overview of the Brazilian economy in the 1980s and 1990s. The chapter discusses the regional differences in Brazil and methodology. The analysis began with an identification of the key sectors in the Brazilian economy and in five macro regions. The key sector indices associated with Hirschman/Rasmussen and the pure linkage methodology was adopted.
