ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights various factors that influence how Australia manages its internal talent pool to increase the country’s competitiveness, ability to innovate and grow within the current context of disruption and global interconnectivity. The chapter focuses on the historical, economic and social policies and practices in the areas of national culture, demographics, immigration, mobility and education to provide a comprehensive discussion of how macro talent management factors impacts Australia’s ability to attract, develop and retain talent. Overall the chapter suggests that Australia’s ability to proactively balance the talent challenges associated with the strong industrial relations climate, geographical isolation and relatively small population, will significantly influence Australia’s future.
