ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a new framework and architecture for designing and developing networked computer based integrated educational systems. With this framework and architecture, a prototype of the integrated educational system (IES), University21, has been developed. University21 consists of five types of virtual rooms: virtual administration office, virtual private office, virtual courseroom, virtual collaboration room and virtual laboratory. Functions and tools associated with each type of rooms are presented and discussed in detail. Many examples are given to show our design ideas and demonstrate how the system functions. University21 is the first integrated educational system designed to support almost all teaching/learning activities towards the goal of global teaching and learning. It can be used by different scales of educational organizations ranging from an individual teacher or professional to a large virtual university.
