ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the comparative study of Hellenic unification, culminating with the breakdown of the Anglo-Hellenic relationship in the case of Cyprus. It deals with the colonial and post-colonial experience of Cyprus, wherein matters of historiography, social and political history. The book examines the country's accession to the European Union and the repercussions of the 2013 financial crisis. It provides the necessary background for the appraisal of Robert Holland's contribution to Cyprus' colonial history. The book discusses the major milestones and ideological factors that influenced the course of historical scholarship of the period under examination. It examines themes pertaining to the island's colonial past which were hitherto unexplored. The book explores the turbulent nature of the Anglo-Hellenic relationship from the establishment of the Greek Kingdom in 1832 to the fall of the Greek Colonels' regime in 1974.
