ABSTRACT

The music, education and cultural identity (MECI) network, coordinated by the department of music of the University of Jyvaskyla (JyU), has its roots in the North–South higher education programme with the University of Pretoria (UP) as the only partner institution then. This chapter is based on the results gained from a survey that was carried out during the 2012 intensive course, hosted by UNISA. The main reason for this survey was to collect data from course participants related to their experiences and perceptions of activities within the MECI project. International collaboration plays a central role in the MECI project. Various forms and viewpoints concerning collaboration were brought forward: in some answers, the focus was on cultural interaction, in others the bias was towards research collaboration. The fact that collaboration of this kind was experienced as important from the perspective of personal growth by many participants can be regarded as significant.
