ABSTRACT
Helping is a deceptively complex activity. In this chapter, we explore issues for you to consider as you begin your community service including: (1) the role of empathy in the practice of helping, (2) understanding the difference between traditional types of helping from more community-based and ecologically based helping, and (3) how your previous civic engagement and community service may differ from service learning. You will hear from former students and a community partner with suggestions for prospective students about to engage in community service.
