ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents an empirical inquiry into the labour force participation strategy of households in Denmark, Belgium and Spain. The author uses two perspectives, international comparison and family type. The chapter focuses on three European countries: Denmark; Belgium; and Spain; which, in many respects, presents very different labour situations. Not only do their employment ratios differ widely, but they also adhere to different value schemes. It compares the results for different sub-samples of persons belonging to various family types, as participation logic differs structurally between family types. In all countries a trend towards greater diversity in demographic behaviour is observed. The traditional course of life has been changing for a steadily growing proportion of the populations. The chapter presents an inquiry into the labour force participation of men and women belonging to different household types in three European countries.
