ABSTRACT

Digital rhetoric has been theorized for the past few decades, following drastic changes in communication technology. Charting the progression of these changes, this opening chapter offers a brief definitional chronology of digital rhetoric as a concept, including a new definition that guides the overall volume. Additionally, the chapter features key themes that guide research in digital rhetoric, including the idea that digital rhetoric is computational and algorithmic, ordered yet playful, participatory and reaching, and embodied. The chapter concludes with an overview of the volume.
