ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the scientific basis underpinning jumping and plyometrics testing and training in gymnastics. The contact time (CT) and flight time are the only variables collected directly by a contact mat. If the CT increases sharply from a certain drop height in plyometric jumps, it is because the gymnast shifts from a Quick Drop Jump to a Counter Movement Drop Jump technique. The use of a contact mat has been proven as an effective assessment tool for gymnasts, which allows real training conditions' monitoring. C. Bosco and his colleagues/team are considered amongst the leading authorities in jumping assessments. Bouncing jumps are indeed extensively practised during daily workouts. Gymnasts acquire this skill from a very early age as part of their daily training routines. Gymnasts could perform quite good arms participation, possibly because of their greater segmental coordination and arm strength.
