ABSTRACT

Though the lives portrayed in this volume can best be described as “imagined,” they are real representations of our modern understanding of the past. The scholars who have created these portraits researched the context for each life that they imagined and they created a realistic, if not real, portrait of what life was like for a Scandinavian trader, a princess in Rus’, or a Serbian monk. The readings that they have provided at the end of their portraits give you a sample of what you too can use to investigate the lives of these medieval individuals. For more information on these individuals, and more resources to investigate their lives, you can utilize the companion website to the project – www.routledge.com/cw/ostrowski.
