ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an overview of the nature of the economy of most African countries. It investigates three common approaches: noninterference of the government; checking the exploitative power of business; the mixed role of government in the economy. The book then explores the formal or informal relations that exist between the private and public sectors in Burkina Faso. It also examines the relationship between the Government of Botswana and Botswana's Confederation of Commerce, Industry, and Manpower (BOCCIM). The book provides critical facts on the role of multinational corporations in Nigeria's industrial development. It also explores corporate bailouts, defensive or subsidies production, consumer product regulation, and taxation in Ghana. The book then reviews the historical background of the economic and political change in the Somali Republic and focuses on the role of business-government partnerships in economic development and infrastructure investment.
