ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between government, business, and society in Nigeria. It provides critical information on the role of multinational corporations in Nigeria's industrial development. The chapter argues that foreign direct investment and multinational corporations are neither inherently good nor bad. Business and government relations in Nigeria are conducted in many ways and through numerous government ministries and agencies. Social environment provides legitimacy for the role of government and business in any society. The manufacturing multinationals in Nigeria are interested in freedom of trade outside their protected home base. They do not need physical control over their markets. Business-government relations in Nigeria are characterized by a love-hate syndrome. Those in business recognize that government decisions affect the economic climate. To regain competitive strength, Nigerian corporations need considerable investments in Research and Development (R&D). Government support of R&D through tax policy is a desideratum in this regard.
