ABSTRACT

Maurice O'Sullivan, professor of literature at Rollins College, makes a simple, convenient distinction between the two by saying the liberal arts is about "content" and liberal education is about "process", or a "coherent, systematic approach to a body of knowledge". One development has been the public funding of higher education in the United States, a dramatic shift from the fourteenth century and the "Artes Liberales". The second development that has altered the role of higher education has been the dramatic change in the skills needed in the modern workplace. Having the majority of students live on campus provides Eastern an opportunity to engage them directly in campus life through an active residential life program. Community service and civic engagement are also valuable avenues for engaging students on and off campus. The on-campus internships are especially appreciated by students without personal transportation to off-campus internship locations.
