ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a few physical techniques that allow the body to retain availability and an open focus in order to facilitate expressing three essential timbral concerns for the conductor: weight, volume and tension. It offers observations on how the baton, fingertips and hand, Torso-Arms, Torso-Legs, Movable-Masses, center of gravity and soft feet coordinate and are all connected and reliant upon each other. The act of making a fist caused compression in the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. A common conducting problem occurs when a gesture is made primarily with the arms and does not include specificity in the hands. The conducting problem that results when the pelvis is forward of the line of gravity is the same as holding the heels together. It will limit the ability to move and, by extension, it also limits the expressive potential. The expressive potential when the conductor is conducting with availability is readily apparent.
