ABSTRACT

During a natural hazard, sea or river pollution or a nuclear accident, large amounts of waste may be generated. Finding new treatment sites for non-hazardous waste requires the synthesis of much information and data about the area. The purpose of this article is to propose a mapping method for prior identification of waste treatment sites. The methodology, developed with a Geographical Information System (GIS), can be used to select and prioritize potential sites in an area, taking into account environmental, economic and societal issues. Initially, the areas in which regulations or technical imperatives make it impossible to create a waste treatment site are excluded. Secondly, land that is not affected by an exclusion order is listed in order of priority. This method is a decision-making tool to help with choosing the location of waste treatment sites.
