ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the challenges for the portfolio management of product development in the automotive industry. The tremendous increase in the complexity of product development linked to the trends makes it even more important to have the competence to make the right choices as a company. Each year the product roadmap is planned and adjusted for a midterm horizon of 3–5 years. Based on this product roadmap, new projects are forecast for the year and resource needs are planned and budgeted for. A decision matrix supports the decision for a company proceeding with the new project, or indicates whether further evaluation is needed. The project type plays an important role for any new project decision. The decision about whether or not a new project should be started not only depends on resource limitations but is also based on a risks and opportunities rating for the project.
