ABSTRACT

Governance and management systems for projects, programmes and portfolios must be improved on a continuous basis. During the assessment stage, the actual state of portfolio management will be analysed by internal or external assessors using one of the aforementioned maturity models. Regular feedback loops, systematic utilization of lessons learned, internal assessments of the performance based on predefined key performance indicators and a continuation of training and coaching will help to achieve a sustainable solution for portfolio management. During an external assessment, the organization's leadership will get a report of the findings together with a list of recommendations, which will form the basis for an action plan. The concept stage elaborates on future solution scenarios first, taking into account the findings of the assessment and the desired state of portfolio management. The assessment can be done by checking available documents, interviewing stakeholders involved in the portfolio management or observing the practice of portfolio management throughout several days of its operation.
