ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates how formal and/or informal procedures might be instrumental for the success of a modern-day concert. The authors first offer an overview of the role of formality and informality in international institutions. In a second step, they discuss which benefits and costs informality would have for a concert more generally, before looking in more detail at how formal and informal procedures might interact in a concert’s mode of operation, especially concerning decision making, organization and transparency. They conclude that a concert would probably have to start with a minimalist design and institutionalize at a later phase.
