ABSTRACT

In the same year in which he published The Grounds of Obedience and Government White moved to London, where he enjoyed a rather busy ‘retirement’. In the 1650s White was not directly involved in politics, but he was comfortable in the political climate of Cromwell’s regime and he took advantage of the collaboration with many Protestant intellectuals, in particular the scientific circle that was formed during the 1650s at Oxford. Before making some considerations on the role and contribution of Thomas White to the Oxford circle, I would like to briefly summarize its origin and aims.
