ABSTRACT
Introduction This chapter discusses the osmotic links between entrepreneurs in small firms and their territorial environments. If small enterprises are able to perform well during periods of structural change, they may create jobs and enhance knowledge, so encouraging market dynamism. The ability of small firms to perform well at such times may be partly explained by their past learning, accumulated through specialisation in traditional activities, and by complex interactions within production and innovation networks.
