From these frustrations arises the topic of this chapter. It remains to be seen whether I am exchanging one set of frustrations for another as I explore the feasibility of working backwards and forwards from Greek homiletic evidence to see if, and to what extent, a development of the Marian cult can be discerned on this basis.5
