ABSTRACT

Writing about the major wars of his time, Agathias of Myrina (531/2-582), an East Roman historian, poet and lawyer of the sixth century,2 stated that the conflict between the Romans and the Persians, known as the Lazic War,3 had a long prelude:

The Romans and the Persians had been at war for a very long time and were continually ravaging each other’s territory. Sometimes they resorted to a policy of sporadic fighting and undeclared hostility making frequent forays and incursions, on other occasions they engaged in open and full-scale warfare.4
