ABSTRACT

The United Kingdom was beginning to emerge from its period of economic stagnation after the Second World War, and signs of recovery were everywhere to be seen. People were speaking of a 'new Elizabethan era', harking back to the glory days of England under Elizabeth I. The organic theologian will see himself as working within the great historical Christian tradition, which he gladly makes his own. Even when he feels he must critique the contemporary expressions or applications of that tradition, he will do so from a deep sense of commitment to the community of faith and its distinctive ideas and values. The project, which has the running title 'A Scientific Theology', sets out to plot a trajectory for Christian theology which maintains its academic and spiritual integrity while encouraging a direct and positive engagement with a scientific culture.
