ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the problems to be addressed about anti-discriminatory issues and practitioner social work and suggests some possible remedies for them. After providing some examples of problems in relation to discrimination and social work practice and research it will then identify the processes whereby discriminatory and anti-discriminatory research can occur. The term anti-discriminatory rather than equal opportunities is deliberately used for a very important reason which needs explanation. In such a potentially vast area which includes both the overall design of the research and the choice of methods, a list of questions is produced rather than attempting to address all the issues which affect and/or impact on anti-discriminatory research and practice in detail. With the enormous variety of research methods and designs available, and service users' abilities and interests the production of a blueprint for all situations would be impossible, as well as undesirable.
