ABSTRACT

To my mind, resilience has two faces. One is hardware, one is the human envelope that operates and protects the hardware. Each is important, but their logic is different. While much thought has been devoted to the former, building the latter must be seen as a key endeavour. My purpose here is to try to balance the picture by comparing the human envelope as a resilience mechanism to the use of requisite imagination in hardware design. We will use examples from NASA and other high-tech operations.
