ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with one aspect of that environment, namely parks and other areas of urban green space. In the Residential Density Guidelines, much is made of the need to provide high quality community facilities if people are to be converted from the suburban model to higher density living. The chapter discusses how considerations of transport and sustainability have caused planners and urban designers to reassess the suburban model. The low-density suburban model is now often scorned by planners if not, of course, by many suburban inhabitants or developers. The suburbs have become associated with sprawl, car dependency, and social isolation. The problem is that, while people resent the traffic jams they experience when travelling from the suburbs into town, they believe, with much justification, which the solution lies in improved roads and transit systems. The most disliked characteristics included 'discarded glass and bottles', 'problems of litter' and 'popular with teenagers'.
