ABSTRACT

Thesis 5. We must first speak of the difference between the functions which are proper to the magisterium and to theologians. 1. The function of the magisterium is authoritatively to maintain the catholic integrity and unity of the Church’s faith and practice. From this there follow specific functions which, at first sight, seem rather negative in character, but which are actually a positive service on behalf of the Church’s life. These include ‘the function of authoritatively interpreting the Word of God, both in Scripture and in Tradition’ (DV10); the censuring of opinions which endanger the faith and morals of the Church, and the setting forth of truths which are especially relevant to the current situation. Although it does not seem appropriate for the magisterium to propose theological syntheses, still, in view of its concern for unity, it has to consider particular truths in the light of the whole, since the integration of particular truths into the whole is an important factor in truth itself.
