ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates on the future of what is surely the core of New Age activities: not the more commercial territory of book sales and the like but the territory of spiritual practitioners. For spiritual practitioners, providing the face-to-face activities, provide the most significant way of pursuing what New Age spiritualities of life are ultimately all about: transformative experience by way of shared practice. As for findings concerning the age profile of spiritual practitioners, they indicate that a very specific category of the population is involved, with few signs of younger people. Spirituality has also become strongly embedded within commercial and mediated cultures. Spiritualities are increasingly abroad within the world of business, being the sacralized version of that increasingly powerful cultural current, the development of soft capitalism. The wider cultural current of inner spirituality may very well become more important than declining traditional religion.
