ABSTRACT
Level crossings are locations where the railway is crossed by a road or path at the same level and where vehicles, pedestrians and other users cross the railway. There are approximately 8000 level crossings, of about 12 different types on Britain’s railway infrastructure, each with a variety of risk control measures depending upon the characteristics of the crossing users, the train traffic, the road or path and the surrounding environment.
