ABSTRACT

The Public Transportation industry, particularly the light railway sector, has known a considerable growth in recent years. This trend is mostly motivated by an increasing quality demand on public transportation networks, and also by the fact that mobility has with no doubt, become a basic need for urban societies. When compared to a heavy subway service, the tramway network provides a profitable and adequate solution for the urban contexts, mostly because of considerable lower infrastructural requirements. In fact, this kind of service is based on reliability and comfort for small distances, whilst the traditional railway service aims mostly for high speed long distance travelling.
