ABSTRACT

These entries span the years 902 to 924, though they concentrate on 909-919. They are laconic and lack narrative development, but are thematically linked. They begin with the death of Ealhswith – Alfred’s widow and Æthelflæd’s mother though not so designated here – in 902. They end with the accession of Æthelstan ‘chosen king by the Mercians’ in 924, and with his marriage of his (unnamed) sister overseas.
