ABSTRACT

Problems of steering the urban development occur not only in ‘mega-cities’ but also in medium-sized cities in developing countries. All of them consume more and more resources and overstep local, regional and global carrying capacities. It is clear that the growth of population and urban areas cannot continue. Sustainable development is an answer but the implementation of this concept into policy occurs too late. Urban growth in developing countries is a challenge to the management capabilities of national and local authorities.
