ABSTRACT

The old-age dependency ratio is an indicator that comprises both the effects of fertility changes and longevity changes as well as the structure of the population. The first group of indicators that are important for the pension schemes is related to demography. The difficulty in discussing the pension-system related indicators mainly lies in the difficulty to compare the existing national pension systems. Another indicator that can be used to monitor the efficiency of the social protection system is the exit age from the labour market. In some countries there are other possible routes of early exit from the labour market, such as for example pre-retirement schemes outside the social security system. Replacement rate calculated net of social security contributions. The future value of replacement rates allows to assess the impact of the pension system design and in particular, changes in the pension system design with regard to the adequacy of the pension promise.
