ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes to the debate on the development of comparative ageing sustainability indicators, in particular in the domain of "income (in)security and poverty". It focuses almost exclusively on material well-being indicators, i.e. indicators in the field of income, poverty and social exclusion levels and trends. There are some 50 social indicators included, of which one fifth can be subsumed under "ageing" and another tenth under "incomes" – none under both headings. To the difference of the 2001 EU report on social inclusion, the "Second EU social report on income, poverty and social exclusion" is substantially more analytical and data driven and includes a vast number and variety of indicators. The EU social report mentions six criteria for its indicators: policy relevance, comparability, availability form harmonised sources, measurability over time, easily understood, stability over time.
