ABSTRACT

The prevention of social exclusion and poverty of older people is one of the key objectives of national policies. The chapter provides a concise description of poverty risks faced by the current populations of older people living in the 25 member countries of the European Union. Due to the differences of data sources in use, the poverty results presented in this chapter cannot be considered to be fully comparable across all 25 countries. Having the highest poverty risk in 15 out of 25 member countries, single parents face a higher poverty risk than older people in most of the other countries. The chapter gives a brief overview of concepts and methods used in measuring older people poverty. In Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, older people are better protected against the risk of poverty than the working-age individuals.
