ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the survey that was aimed at 848 Finnish new media and software companies. Knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) companies play a large role in the innovation activities of their customers, but they face also themselves the same innovation challenges common to service providers. Thus, the local innovation environment also consists of a set of different kinds of inter-organizational relationships and contacts. The spatial dimension of the companies' explicit, inter-organizational innovation networks was examined by asking the importance of collaboration with the organizations belonging to the most and second most important innovation partner group locating in different regions. Individual professionals' personal linkages and social networks play a certain role in the companies' innovation activities. The innovation activities in the KIBS companies differ to some extent from the innovation in manufacturing companies. For example, product development is integrated with customer projects and usually carried out side by side along with normal daily routines.
