ABSTRACT

Cinematic adaptation of novels is, however, a two-way street: just as the novel can affect the reception and response of a film, films, especially those with bigbudget studio funds for extensive cross-promotion, can affect the reception of the novels on which they are based. Perhaps more significant, although less quantifiable than the critics’ reactions to films are the responses of readers to cinema’s influence on their books, especially to the primary tool of cross-promotion: the movie tie-in book cover.
